Day Six: The Promise to Bless Us

“If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.  All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God.”   Deuteronomy 28:1-2

One summer during my high school years, my church youth group took a mission trip to Geneva, New York.  We spent a week in this small town painting homes, cleaning churches, and doing youth rallies in the community at night.  A special highlight was getting to travel to Niagara Falls in Canada.  You can’t visit Niagara Falls without taking a ride on the Maid of the Mist.  This boat ride takes you right down in front of the large, roaring waterfall.  When you get on the boat you are given a blue poncho to wear.  You definitely don’t want to board the boat without this on.

As we neared the bottom of the falls, the water began to splash all over us, dousing us, and it was then that I realized why they gave us a poncho to wear.  We were getting soaked, but it felt refreshing on that hot summer day.  One of the things I remember most was that I could not hear anything.  The waterfall was so loud!  With over 5.5 billion gallons of water flowing over it per hour, there was no way we would be able to hear clearly. I tried talking to my sister and friends on the boat, but quickly realized there was no point when we were that close to the waterfall. I loved being so close to it, being able to feel the splashes from it, and not being able to hear anything else above the roar of it. It was an amazing experience.

Much like this powerful waterfall, blessings from God will be overflowing and abundant if we can do one thing…obey Him.  Now, that seems like an easy thing to do, but obedience can be extremely hard.  For some reason, we humans have a difficult time doing everything that God asks of us.  We give God excuses of why we can’t do that or we put off what He asks us to do, believing that we will do it another time.  Why can we not just obey and then receive God’s blessings?

In order to obey God and experience the overflow of His blessings, I think we need to do three things that remind me of my experience at Niagara Falls: remain close to God, feel God’s presence, and listen for God’s voice.

Remain Close to God

We cannot see and feel the blessings from the Lord if we are far away from Him.  It just won’t happen.  A person who walks closely with God is praying, spending time with Him, listening to Him, obeying Him, reading His Word, worshiping Him, and serving others.  It is imperative that we follow God and His Word closely in order to fully receive the blessings from above.  Doing these things will help us remain in close relationship with our Lord.

Feel God’s Presence

Much like how I felt the splashes of Niagara Falls when I was up close, we can feel His splashes of love and blessings when we are able to feel His presence.  There are days when I can feel His presence more than others.  And that’s no one’s fault but my own.  When I am truly remaining close to God by doing those things which I mentioned above, then I will be able to feel His presence.  I don’t like the days when I cannot feel God.  It’s like something is missing.  That’s when I need to get back on the right path and work hard at maintaining my closeness with Him.

Listen for God’s Voice

When I was on the Maid of the Mist ride, I could hear nothing else but the roar of the waterfall.  When we are obeying God, we must listen intently for His voice.  We need to block out all other voices and focus on His.  When we do this, we will be able to hear nothing else but His voice.  We will be able to filter out the other voices and will be able to focus on His voice alone.  It will be the only one we will hear.

I don’t know about you, but I want to receive all the blessings that God wants to give me.  I want to work hard to obey Him with all my heart by remaining close to Him, feeling His presence, and listening for His voice.  Because I know if we do these things, then we will be flooded with blessings from our Heavenly Father who so longs to lavish us with them.

Will you join me in standing on His promise to bless us?

Prayer:  Gracious and Loving God, we thank you for your promise to bless us.  Help us to obey all that you ask of us, big or small.  Give us the desire to walk closely with You, feel Your presence and listen to Your voice.  Thank you so much for all the many things you have blessed us with.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
  1.  Write out the blessings from God you have received in your life.  This list will be quite long!
  2. Is there a place in your life where you are waiting for God to pour down His blessings?  What can you do while you wait?
  3. In what way do you need to obey God in your life right now?  Have you been putting it off?  Make a promise to Him today that you will obey Him.
