You Must Be A Teacher

It never fails.  Every time I go to Wal-Mart and buy school supplies in bulk (like markers1markers, glue sticks, crayons, etc), the cashier looks at me and says, “You must be a teacher.”  And my answer…”Yes, I am!  However, I’m not a school teacher, but I am a teacher in the church.”

The reactions are different with each cashier.  Some nod their head, others say ok and change the subject, but others interact a little more.  Just today an older gentleman was the cashier in my line and he asked me that question.  When I replied he said, “That is the best teacher of all.  You teach the most important things in life.”

How true his statement is.  I am not saying that what school teachers teach is not important.  It is very important and we are all so grateful for what teachers do for our kids at school!  But, teaching about God and Jesus is THE most important kind of teaching.  Why?  Because it effects our eternity.

I told my kids at church just the other day about the importance of having Jesus biblelive in their heart and believing in him.  I told them I wanted to see each of them in heaven one day and the only way we would see each other is if we both believed in Jesus as our Savior.  We must accept him into our lives and ask forgiveness for all the bad things we do and believe that he forgives us.  We teach because we want each child to accept Jesus.  We want each child to love and serve God all the days of their lives.

I became a teacher in the church because I felt the calling of God.  God gave me the desire and passion to teach children and youth about him.  I absolutely love what God has called me to do.  I can’t imagine not teaching in the church.

If you are a teacher in the church, your job is important.  Never let anyone tell you that what you teach is NOT important.  You are a teacher of the Lord.   You teach the most important things in life.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”   1 Peter 4:10

  1. Vanessa – I agree! Teaching Sunday School is so important because we are communicating the Gospel!

I think my favorite thing about teaching is doing something unexpected … having an unexpected object lesson…playing a funny noise, or having the kids participate in a fun way. Not to distract from the lesson, but to enhance it, and more importantly to keep them engaged during a 15-20 minute talk.

Here’s to buying more school supplies!

    • Those are fun things, Nathan! Blessings to you in your ministry!

I agree – so important. I am, however, moving on from my Kids Min role to teach in a primary school. A new ministry and a new mission field!

    • Meg, God will use you wherever he needs and I know that you will shine brightly for him at your new school. Prayers for you as you begin a new job!

Yes, so very true.He has led me – I am confident that He has a plan – both for me and for the new pastors at our Church. 12 months ago it was the wrong timing – now it is great.
