Walking through grief at any age is truly difficult. And it is so hard to journey through grief when you are a child.
If you’re an adult and know a child who is dealing with grief, then I invite you to check out the book, You’ll Find Me at the Ocean: A Journey of Grief Through the Eyes of a Child. This book is written by new children’s author, Martha Black. She has personally experienced the death of her mother and has written a beautiful book to help children cope with the loss of a parent or loved one.
In this story, Beth loses her mother to cancer. But before she passes away, her mother explains to her ways she can be reminded of her on this earth. She says she can find her in many different things found at the ocean: chirps of birds, sunrise, warmth of sun on your skin, pelicans, butterflies, dolphins, seashells, footprints in the sand, ocean breeze, sea oats, sounds of the ocean waves, clouds, birds as they stand strong against the wind, raging storms, stillness of the ocean water, sparkles of the water in the sun, endless horizon, sunset, and moon rising.
When she lists each of these, she writes a beautiful description of how she can be found in them. And, most importantly, she lists a Bible verse that goes along perfectly with what she is describing. It truly is an amazing story of grief through the eyes of a child.
And the illustrations for this book are stunning! They are actually photographs that her cousin took and have been made to look like watercolor. Each page captures the ocean so well.
If you serve in children’s ministry and you are in need of a book to share with a child who is going through the loss of a loved one, I would highly recommend You’ll Find Me at the Ocean by Martha Black. And if you are a parent, grandparent, guardian, or friend of a child dealing with grief, check out this book!
