Who’s ready to take a road trip with Mary and Joseph this Christmas?
This year I wanted to do something a little different for the families at my church. I got to thinking about what families do at Christmas time and I realized that everyone is (at some point) in the car traveling, going from one house to the next. So why not come up with an idea for things they can do (that relate to the Nativity story) while traveling?
This birthed the idea for the Family Road Trip Christmas Kit (or something I also call “Road Trippin’ with Mary & Joseph). This kit is filled with fun items for your church families (or your own family) to do together in the car this Christmas season.
For this kit I purchased large Kraft brown paper bags. On the outside I glued on the Road Trippin’ logo on one side, along with the list of all the items included in the kit on the other side.
Here is a list of items I stuffed into each Family Road Trip Christmas Kit:
- Christmas Activity Sheets
I included a Christmas crossword puzzle I found on Education.com, as well as a Word Search and I Spy activity sheet that I downloaded from Deeper KidMin. - Nativity Crafts
I purchased 2 different types of Nativity crafts from Oriental Trading. I included both for each family. If a family had more than 2 kids I found other OT crafts used in years past and put those in so each child would have one to do. Jesus is the Best Gift & Gifts Christ Gives Us Ornament Kit are the 2 crafts I purchased this year. - Nativity Finger Puppets
These Nativity finger puppets I found on Oriental Trading. This is a great tool to use for children as they re-tell the story or act it out as their parents read the story. There are 6 finger puppets for each person to use (enough for 4 people/package). I included 1 set per family. - Bethlehem Passport Sticker Book
Another cool Oriental Trading find! These books include stickers for them to use as well as space to draw scenes from the Nativity story. - Christmas Coloring Book & Crayons
Another purchase from Oriental Trading for these simple Christmas coloring books and crayons. - Christmas Music Playlist
Most families listen to music in the car so why not create a playlist of some suggestions for fun worship songs! This playlist includes all Christmas worship songs for kids. - Nativity Trivia
How well do you know the Nativity story? I came up with these questions for parents to quiz their kids or even for kids to quiz their parents! I also included the answer key. - Snacks & Bottled Water
Every family likes to snack in the car (well at least mine do). I bought pre-packaged snacks (like Goldfish, Teddy Grahams, Oreos) as well as small bottled waters. - Wet Ones
If you have little ones then you definitely need wet ones for those sticky situations! I bought the individual packs of Wet Ones and included several per kit. - Tissues
Tissues are also a must for a road trip! I went to Dollar Tree and bought small individual packs of tissues and included 2 per road trip kit.
Other items I included were things they can do during Advent with their families at home:
