It’s Christmas! Your family is busy with lots of activities. You find yourself in the car a lot…traveling from one home to the next…visiting relatives and spending time with them. But you are struggling on those long road trips because you don’t know what to do with your kids. You may be searching for some fun Christmas activities for kids that can be done in the car.
How Do You Make Christmas Travel Fun for Kids?
I think we can all remember what it was like to be a kid and having to travel long road trips in the car with your family. You got bored easily and asked a million times how much farther (to the annoyance of your parents). Nowadays, kids have use of technology to keep them entertained. The easiest thing for kids to do in a car is to watch movies or play video games on the phone.
But I think road trips can be fun even without a phone or a movie to watch. I think we can provide some fun Christmas activities for kids on these long family road trips (that don’t require the use of technology). And…I think we can make these activities fun and engaging and have them focus on the birth of Jesus. And I believe we can make these road trips more fun when the whole family is involved!
Fun Road Trip Christmas Activities for Kids
The following are fun activities for kids at Christmas. These activities are simple and easy to do in the car. They help kids and families have great discussions about the birth of Jesus all the while having fun in the car! (For a copy of the printables for this resource, just subscribe to my blog!)
Christmas Crossword Puzzle
You can use this Christmas crossword puzzle from Education.com for your kids.
Mega Christmas Activity Pack
This pack is filled with lots of fun activities! Word search, I Spy, Christmas Cootie Catcher, Christmas airplane, bookmarks and so much more! Kids will have fun in the car doing these activities!
Nativity Craft
Oriental Trading has inexpensive crafts and they have great ones for Christmas! Some of my favorite are the Jesus is the Best Gift & the Gifts Christ Gives Us Ornament Kit. These are peel and stick crafts that require no glue, which is a plus since these are done in the car!
Nativity Finger Puppets
Nativity finger puppets are a great tool to use for children as they re-tell the story. Kids can act it out as their parents read the story. There are 6 finger puppets for each person to use (enough for 4 people/package).
Bethlehem Passport Sticker Book
This passport sticker book is awesome! It has stickers for kids to use as well as space to draw scenes from the Nativity story.
Christmas Coloring Book & Crayons
Kids love to color so why not include Christmas coloring books and crayons?
Christmas Music Playlist
It’s fun to listen to Christmas music in the car with your family! Create a playlist of fun worship songs! This playlist includes all Christmas worship songs for kids
Nativity Trivia
How well do you know the Nativity story? Quiz your family with these questions and test your own knowledge of the birth of Jesus as well.
Family Road Trip Christmas Kits
Now it’s time to put this all together! You can do this for your own family or if you serve in Children’s Ministry, you can do this for each of the families in your church.
All you need is a Kraft bag or a small plastic box. Print out the logo (which is the featured image at the top of the post). Add all the above items to your kit. You might also want to pack the below items as they are always needed for road trips, too!
Snacks & Bottled Water
Every family likes to snack in the car (well at least mine do). Buy pre-packaged snacks (like Goldfish, Teddy Grahams, Oreos) as well as small bottled waters.
Wet Wipes
If you have little ones then you definitely need wet wipes for those sticky situations! I like the bottle of Wet Ones or the individual packs of Wet Ones work great for the car, too!
Tissues
Tissues are also a must for a road trip! I went to Dollar Tree and bought small individual packs of tissues and included 2 in the kit.
Other items I included were things kids can do during Advent with their families at home:

- Family Advent calendar for 2020
